Old town

The OldTown is the most attractive part of Budva.  It was built on an islet, which was connected to the land by a sandbar and, in that way, became a peninsula.  Such peninsulas are quite rare and they are called “tombolo”.  One of the most famous tombolos is Sveti Stefan, while it is almost forgotten that Budva was a tombolo once.

The OldTown is a unique architectural and urban entity, which has existed, as a settlement, since ancient times.  Historical sources, written monuments and abundance of archaeological material give evidence that Budva is one of the oldest urban centres on the Adriatic coast, more than 2.500 years old.  Among special attractions of the OldTown are his walls, originating, for the greatest part, from the Middle Ages, from the period of Venetian rule.  In the 1667 earthquake, Budva was destroyed and new walls were constructed on the remains of the old ones.  The town was damaged again in the 1979 earthquake and subsequently the whole town was reconstructed and restored.

Today, the urban area of the town shows a sense of unity owing to harmoniously intertwined streets and squares from the late Middle Ages, which make a whole with the powerful walls, their towers and town gates.  There, where numerous galleries, shopping malls, bars and fine restaurants are situated and where smells of the sea and fried fish mix with the sounds of music, in the heat of a summer’s night, everybody can find their place.  The OldTown is a live exhibition space where numerous performances are held in an ambiance of original narrow streets and tiny squares.  The Poets Square and TheatreCity are the names that portray a festival character of Budva.
